#SharkWeek: Take a Bite Out of a Book!

  • by Louise Lareau

If I could go back in time, I would never have watched Jaws. I cannot say that I was a big fan of sharks to begin with, but watching that movie changed my view of the ocean forever. Actually, it changed my view of every river, pond, lake or Olympic size swimming pool that I have ever swum in. It’s sad really, because sharks are rather fascinating. Did you know that there are more than 450 different species of sharks and over half are threatened or endangered? People kill over 100 million sharks each year. Sharks have a bad reputation, but people are more likely to be killed by a disease-carrying mosquito, lightning, a toilet, a bee sting, a vending machine, a tornado or the flu than they are a shark. The Library has dozens of children's books about sharks. Here is a short list to get you started.
